1600 Hours, October 6th, 2003
Commander Deveaux entered the CIC precisely at the top of the hour and the change of watch. The pair of marines at the door snapped to attention, Colonel Pritcher turned and announced the CO's arrival, and there were a flurry of salutes which were all quickly returned. At the moment Darius was more concerned with the crew doing their jobs than formalities and protocols.
Although the ship had been active for the past three days, this was the first true watch of their new tour. Dog Watch or not, the CO would not be absent when his ship left the yard destined for Ophion. There was much to do and little time to do it.
The public address system pinged and whistled across the ship as a communications officer picked up the receiver. "Eight bells*." he announced. He spoke louder and with a firmer tone than normal, this announcement carrying more meaning. He didn't say anything extra, but all on the ship knew that those two words meant the ship was about to depart the shipyards.
As the comms officer replaced the receiver in its housing, a tactical officer spoke up. "Umbilical bridges severed." he reported. "Flight pods and all hatches secured. All personnel and craft aboard." The report was more important than it seemed lest the ship embarrass itself be leaving without collecting all its Vipers, not counting to see if there were still crewmen on the shipyard, or pulling away while still physically attached to the shipyard.
"Engineering is reporting in." a second comms officer stated.
"Systems are now green." the chief helmsman interjected.
"The shipyad has given us clearance to depart when ready." the officer added. "All other departments report ready for departure."
Darius took it all in as the various stations reported in, from Weapons Control to Damage Control. With the final report, Pritcher turned to him and saluted. "The ship is ready for departure, sir."
Commander Deveaux stepped forward to the CIC's large central terminal and nodded to his XO. "Take us out."
With a few minutes the great ship had slowly maneuvered clear of the large shipyard and all the local traffic flying around it. Eight great engines then fired all in unison and the slow crawl forward quickly accelerated. The Titan Class Battlestar set a heading of 260 carom 13 toward Ophion**.
*Eight Bells - Traditional signal for 4, 8, and 12 O'Clock aboard a ship. Eight bells thus means the end/start of a watch.
**The ship is travelling at sublight speeds, not FTL jumps so it will take a little over three days to get there.
