As of the writing of this (August 13th), we haven't even left Aerilon yet. However, seeing as how this is our first huge event and once we do leave we'll want to roll right into it, here is a basic run down of what is going to happen once the war games start.
Timeline
10/6 - Hyperion departs Aerilon and begins a leisurely cruise toward Ophion. Crews begin to practice and drill in the few days before the war games are to begin.
10/10 - Arrival and Opening Ceremony - Other than merely arriving, checking in, and doing other boring administrative stuff, this is basically a parade day. The entire participating force (which is nearly 1/3 of the entire Fleet) does a huge show of force past a reviewing stand of sorts. The media takes pictures, the president kisses babies, the Cylons watching shit their pants at how awesome the military might of humanity is... you know, normal stuff.
Week 1 - Staged Sims
The first week of the three week event is a bunch of drills and skirmishes. Think of them as practice for the real thing. Although it technically is the real thing and these are the events when the Hyperion is solo so it's time to really shine and show why she's the baddest ship in the Fleet.
10/11 - Patrol - This is basically supposed to be a simulation of long patrols along the armistice line or the red line. For the most part there is nothing out there and this is considered the most boring day, "the warm up to the warm up".
10/12 - "Planetary" Assault - Technically a moon, but it's a simulation for a quick strike from space to the ground. This includes precision air support from Vipers and Raptors and of course the quick deployment of marines to get boots on the ground. Marines then go off doing their thing.
10/12 - Damage Control Events - After the marines have their fun, there will be various simulated emergencies on the ship including both combat and noncombat situations. The entire crew will have to work DC to quickly and effectively eliminate the danger and fix the simulated damage to the ship.
10/13 - Cyberwarfare - Missiles, bullets, and shells aren't the only thing being thrown at you in a battle. This is actually two sims at once. The first group is for the pilots (and of course ECOs) that will test their skills evading missiles by use of electronic counter measures. The second bigger group is Hyperion dealing with direct hacking attempts. CIC types will be busy fighting viruses while other crew members will be working to fix the simulated damage caused by said virus (e.g. the virus takes control of a section of the ship and seals all the doors so engineers need to go through and manually take control of them so the area can still be used).
10/13 - Boarding Action - Hyperion and another Battlestar will pair up and take turns boarding and then being boarded. This is primarily a marine operation but all crew members will be involved.
10/14 - Air Superiority - Hyperion will once again face another Battlestar. This time the air wings will be the combatants. They will need to engage each other in dog fights while also engaging the enemy Battlestar as well. The Battlestar triple A will be firing but their heavy guns are not to fire. All damage done to the opposing ship must be done by Vipers and Raptors.
10/15 - Full Scale Battle - With the individual little sims done, everything is thrown together in the biggest cluster frak ever. All the participating ships (something like 400 warships, 1/10th of them Battlestars) line up in two teams and just hammer away at each other until one side is all simulated dead.
10/16 - Day of Rest
Weeks 2 and 3 - Campaign
Part two of the war games lasts from 10/17 to 10/31 (or sooner if one side is completely annihilated before then). Once again the entire force is split into two teams, but this time instead of being placed in staged battles, taking turns, waiting on referees, etc. the two sides wage war on one another as if it were the real thing. Their admirals plot their overall strategies, ships are assigned missions, battles are fought across various strategic points, and you will generally live in a state of readiness for two weeks, not knowing if you're going to be woken from sleep with simulated nukes hitting your Battlestar.
Hyperion is assigned to the OpFor (Opposing Force). OpFor is sometimes considered very prestigious and often more skilled units are chosen for this assignment. From a practical standpoint, you have fewer numbers than the other side and you're most likely going to lose.
For the past 35 years that the Ophion Games have been held, the OpFor has always been stylized as the Cylons. This year, however, the games have changed slightly. With no sight nor sound of the Cylons for decades, it has been decided to fight a more modern and practical enemy. Therefore, the OpFor this year are posing simply as a separatist faction fighting a revolt/civil war/ revolution depending on your political opinion of what it is.
Post War Games
Following the War Games, the ship is most likely going to stop someplace for a few days for a short resupply. All remaining dummy ammunition will be offloaded and replaced with the real deal. That month's worth of other stores will also be tanked off at maximum. While there, most of the crew will probably get a day or two for some quick R&R with the local populace to unwind, get in bar fights, and wind up in civilian prison needing to be bailed out before the Battlestar leaves without you.
Following that, the ship is headed out for a few months to patrol the armistice line.
Sound good? Questions?
