Pyramid Pyramid is the pastime of the Twelve Colonies with no other major sport to compete with that title (both because they never mention any other sport and because of the sheer prominence with which it is shown). Pyramid is a team game of agility, skill, and strength. The game is a bit of a hybrid of many sports most notably basketball. The layout of the court, players "boxing out" and "checking up", and of course simply "shooting" are all similar. The major differences include: the nets are oriented differently (horizontal instead of vertical); both nets and ball are smaller; the shape of the court is different; instead of dribbling, players can only take three steps before passing, shooting or bouncing the ball from a wall (yes, use of walls so no out-of-bounds excepting of course the ball going over or past a wall); and the game is more physical akin to lacrosse or even rugby. Court sizes can apparently vary from large stadium arena sized to small "backyard" courts that can sometimes even spring up inside a ship. Like basketball, Pyramid can be played both with a full court and with a much shortened half-court with but one goal to shoot on.

Above is a basic layout of a small scale pyramid arena, what one would call a "backyard" pyramid court. There is one main goal at the top of the pyramid and at least five backboards along the sides and the other two corners for players to bounce the ball off of. There are also four neutral zones around the court where the ball carrier may not be physically assaulted by the defending team (remember that Pyramid is a full contact sport and if not in a neutral zone then that player might get completely laid out). For smaller courts like this after retrieving the ball from the other team, before attempting to score themselves, they must take the ball back to one of the neutral zones (like taking the ball behind the three point line in half court basketball). From there they may immediately take a shot on goal. Professional teams would play on longer, more rectangular courts approximately the size of a soccer/football pitch with goals at either end and many backboards lining the walls of the arena. Naturally, with a larger playing field one there are no rules about taking the ball out past a certain point before going on the offensive.

Building a Team
Team Sizes Pyramid teams range in size depending on the size of the court, preference of the players, and duration and intensity of the game. For small courts, anything more than five-on-five just becomes a crowd of people. Three-on-three is the standard with one-on-one being a favorite as well. Two-on-two and four-on-four (and even uneven mismatched teams) are also possible. A profession game plays a full ten players per side although for informal games you can of course play with fewer.
Teams, however, are not merely limited to the number of players allowed on the field at one time. Like most sports, substitutions are allowed and actually fairly regular to rotate fresh players into the action and give the outgoing players a chance to rest and recover.
Equipment Due to the violent nature of pyramid play, in a professional game all players wear limited forms of protection (mainly to protect against falling and not other players) including soft padded gloves, shin pads, and helmet.
Of course where would the game be without a ball. Pyramid is played with a small round ball the size of a mini soccer ball (size 1 while size 5 is a full regulation soccer ball). The goal is only slightly larger than the ball naturally making shots all the more difficult (and shots from a distance or from the outside even more difficult).
