History: Sidney was born to Alexander Genevieve on June 24th, 1959, nearly five years before the end of the Cylon War. His mother, Genevieve, worked for the colonial government as a secretary for the Caprica Quorum member Herbert Jefferson Jr. While his father served as the commander of the Battlestar Prometheus. Sidney from a young age, was just like his father. Not only in looks but in the way he moved, acted and socialized.
He was a headstrong baby and it only got worse as he grew old enough to walk and talk. When he was only three years, old not long before the war was to come to an unexpected close, Sidney's father Alexander was killed, when the Battlestar Prometheus was destroyed. The loss of his father, though he didn't know him well, weighed heavily on Sidney. He became more rebellious and pushy with getting his way as he grew older, though his focus changed from being troublesome youth and on to leading a life that would give him a chance to follow in his fathers footsteps. When Sidney was twelve years old his mother sent him to a military school upon his request there on Caprica. With the influence of his mother's career and the reputation of his father, he was able to get in to the best one Caprica had to offer, Ronald D. Moore Academy, named for the most widely attributed hero of the Cylon War.
Year by year Sidney would continue to prove himself a worthy student in the school drawing the attention of the Moore's Dean, Terry Carter. Sidney continued to attend the school the rest of his education. When he turned seventeen, he signed the paperwork to go enlisted. Even with the protest of Carter himself, Sidney's mind could not be changed into going to the academy instead and going in as an officer. Sidney intended to do as eight generations of Bainbridge men before him had done before and start his career as enlisted. (His father being by far the one to make it the highest)
Sidney went in to basic training three weeks after his eighteenth birthday, for a career as a deckhand. Though he had signed up for the position of a deck hand, his first duty station was actually set to be at the Caprican HQ, where he would serve out his first five years as enlisted. During this time Sidney would also attend college and get his degree in political sciences.
After finishing out his degree Sidney was shipped off Picon, to begin the process of going from enlisted to officer to become a Viper pilot. A year of OCS and another year of flight school, and Sidney was shipped off to his first duty station, The Gunstar Theseus as an Ensign. Sidney had proven himself time and time again through his time at the school and in OCS and Flight School and continued to do so as on the Theseus. He was quickly given his promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade.
1987 proved to be an interesting year for the young pilot, it would be his first time serving in a combat situation. The Gunstar Theseus would be sent out to the Ragnar Anchorage(an unmanned orbital refueling station and naval armory, suspended in the upper atmosphere of the gas giant Ragnar) to deal with a well organised smuggler ring that supplied the more commonly known terrorist group STO, or The Soldiers of The One. His squad would be responsible for removing nearly all of the threat, with the rest of the wing mopping up the remainder.
Sidney's first combat assignment was flying patrols around the Ragnar Anchorage, Piloting the Mark III Viper, while assigned to the 39th Fighter Group. The Theseus Commander decided to create an entire new squadron, The Demons. It would be made up of new Mark IV Vipers and at the behest of its new Squad Commander, the legendary Major Lyon Himan "Chaim" Green(Also called Lorne Greene due to misprints of his name during operations near Sagittaron years later.). Because he was a natural leader and excellent pilot, Bainbridge was among those chosen to form the new Squadron. He was assigned to the 4th Fighter Squadron.
On August 18, 1987, Razor was part of a group flying top cover for a squad of Raptors carrying Marine infiltration teams to strike the smugglers in the comfort of their own home, a mission doomed to be scrapped on the Raptors part. Nearing their target, the fighters were attacked by Smuggler's Multirole fighter craft. During the battle, Bainbridge shot down two Ki-43 "Starhounds" and one Ki-61 "Windless." On the following day, near the same location, he downed two more Starhounds. This established him as an ace within in two days, after undergoing a frustrating half-year of rookie status with no opportunities to engage the enemy.
Bainbridge's career nearly came to an end on October 17, 1987 when he scrambled from the Theseus to intercept transports being escorted by stolen Mark III Vipers, taken during convoy to Scorpio Yards, and sold to the STO on the black market. During the ensuing dogfight, Razor observed at least seven STO fighters attacking a lone Mark IV that was trailing smoke. Without hesitation, Bainbridge dove into the seven enemy fighters and quickly scuttled three of them. Unfortunately the remaining four Zeros were able to attack Bainbridge and severely damage his Viper.
With his controls shot out, Bainbridge decided to eject, as he was on a crash course with the Ragnar station. But as he ejected the Viper, his combat chassis control arm locked up on something in the cockpit. From 12,000 ft to impact, to 5,000 ft to impact, Bainbridge struggled to free himself from the stricken Viper. Finally Razor was able to free himself and deploy ejection seat only 1,000 ft from certain death. He later said that his chair's booster had only just cleared the angle from the station's edge, and that he'd just missed smashing into it by mere inches. Raptor S&R birds recovered Razor fourteen minutes later. Bainbridge suffered a injuries including some broken ribs and minor frostbite. He spent six weeks in the hospital before he returned to his squadron.
Bainbridge's skill at maneuvering the Mark IV was legendary, and he would become one of the top scoring combat pilots in Colonial history. Had it not been for periodic illnesses and heavy administrative duties as Commander, he might have become the Fleet's leading ace. Civilian contractor Noah Hathaway bunked with him for a time and flew as his wingman on several unauthorized missions, and was credited with one aerial kill. Squadmates recalled Razor ordering Hathaway around, telling him to run errands as though he were a servant. Bainbridge wrote a book on advanced combat tactics for the 5th Battle Group that would go on to become a training template at the NSAWC Training Program on Caprica. On December 25–26, 1987, Sid downed at least seven STO multirole fighters in just two days over Ragnar. With 38 kills to his credit, Bainbridge was only two victories behind Major Richard Lawrence Hatch, the Colonial Fleet's all-time top ace.
Shortly after the engagement over Ragnar, Sidney was sent off to his next assignment aboard the Battlestar Pegasus. Within a six months of being sent there, he was promoted to Lieutenant. The Pegasus would prove to be one of those posts where nearly nothing ever happens. Training, patrolling and just being a typical soldier. The one good thing that would come from his time here, (with a little push from his mother's political connections back on Caprica) Sid would be sent off to an Advanced Tactical Training School(ATTS) before returning to take over a squad leader position there.
When Sidney departed the Pegasus, he was in line for a promotion to Captain and in early 1992, he was given the promotion aboard the Battlestar Triton. Here, he began the process of forming his own new squad; The Reapers. Sidney was given a blank check so to speak. He was to form a squad of the best pilots that the colonies had to offer. It took Sidney nearly three months to pick all the pilots for his squad, selecting the best and brightest from around the fleet to fill his ranks.
Last to be selected by Bainbridge, was a young ensign by the name of Tyler Tremaine. Though just out of flight school, his training record was the makings of an ace. With his prior work history with J&R, Sidney saw potential in him and was willing to take on the risk of having him as a Reaper. The two would quickly bond and prove to be the best team that the Reapers had to offer. Sidney was a good pilot, but his skill was nothing compared to the young Ensign he had picked.
A year later, the pair would end up facing the greatest challenge of their careers. They had been looking for a civilian ship calling out a distress signal. Just as they were about to call off the search, they rounded one of the large asteroids and found the Karaya with three bogies around it. With their seamless teamwork, it took little time for them to dispatch the threat, only to face a new one. A radiological alarm going off, showing that the civilian ship was harboring a nuclear device.
With a bit of hesitation, the pair boarded the ship and secured the nuke, only to have orders come down from above even their commanders head, to rearm the nuke and allow the ship to proceed with its current course. With what little protest Sidney and Ty were able to put up being in vain, they compiled with the mission, only to hear that the Karaya was responsible for the detonation above one of the colonies, taking many innocent lives with it. It was a moment in Sidney's history that he tries to avoid thinking about, for the guilt that he carries for it.
When 1994 rolled around, the Triton and the Reapers were sent off as tensions escalated over Sagittaron. The war gave the reapers a chance to prove themselves in a full on combat situation and when the dust settled at the end of the war, the Reapers were the undisputed kings of the skies. The Reapers were denoted as the spearhead on the air superiority of Sagittaron.
With the war over and the colonial navy having made quick work of the rebels Sidney found himself in the spotlight of navy leadership. He was reassigned to the Gunstar Juno, but before he was stationed there he first was sent to a military leadership course. Once he arrived at the Juno he was placed in as their CAG where shortly after Tyler was sent to for his next duty station as well. The Juno was a low key post for the pair with only minor actions here and there along their path.
Eventually the Juno's X.O. would retire Giving the OOD the chance to move up and Sid the chance to move up to OOD just before Ty was sent of to his next station. Sidney would serve in this position until March of 2000 when he would again recieve a promotion and a new stationing to the Patrolstar Hades as its X.O. With the new found rank of Lieutenant Colonel Sidney found himself closely followed by the Admiralty. They were not subtle about their intentions for Sidney in the future. They had a ship that would be in need of a command come early 2004, the Gunstar Hephaestus, and they had tapped Sidney for the job.
The Patrolstar Hades was at the Yards over Scorpia, attached to Patrolstar Squadron (PstRon) 5 and from then until April 2000, she performed escort duty from the Blue Line to Darrius Harbor near Helios Gamma, to the opposite side of Delta. On 7 April, Hades was assigned to Task Force 1, composed of Battlestar Division 3, which held extensive training exercises along the Aquaria Orbit, until it departed for The Virgon Gap on 1 June. Upon her arrival, The Hades was assigned to TF 17, commanded by Vice Admiral Marc Mitscher. She engaged in wargame patrols and training exercises for a month and then escorted a convoy back to Scorpia. After overhaul and subsequent space trials in the Ophion Pass, she returned to The Virgon Gap in mid-August and began a period of training and upkeep. On 15 October, she was assigned to TF 16 composed of Battlestar Odin and the Battlestar Yahuman. TF 16 departed Virgon Gap on peacekeeping patrol, on the 19th of October, and was joined the following week by the Gunstar Havoc and the Patrolstar Hermes with their Battlestar screen.
The task force was operating outside of the Leonis orbit when on the 24th of October, it was notified that a STO carrier force was converging on Irs' moon, Hera. Task Force 17 (TF17), The Gunstar Tyche, The Patrolstar Eros and The Battlestar Galactica, joined TF 16 and the merged force was designated TF 61.
On 26 October, scout Raptors from The Yahuman located the STO force. At 0944, the first STO fighters were sighted and Hermes was hit by bombs 30 minutes later. At 1125, Hades was attacked by a formation of 20 Starhounds. Twenty minutes later, a, STO fighter crashed into The Hades, causing a heavy explosion.
According to one version, the missiles carried by the fighter had not exploded on impact, but did so some time later. This caused even more damage and casualties. The forward part of the ship was enveloped in a sheet of smoke and debris from bursting Tilium tanks and everything forward of frame fourteen had to be abandoned. The commander of the Hades was knocked unconscious during the explosions, and Lt Colonel Bainbridge took command. Hades' guns downed six of the Sto fighters, and her squadrons were responsible for 17 enemy kills. By 1207 hours, the DC Teams had recovered the fore decks, largely assisted by her Executive Officer's decision to steer the ravaged ship under the cover of the The Galactica and The Odin's combined flack suppression fire.
This logistical endeavor to communicate the change in firing pattern was performed by Bainbridge while in combination with directing his own gunnery commander. With 57 killed or missing, 12 wounded, her magazines depressurised, and temporary loss of steering control from the port thrusters, Hades retained her position in the screen with all serviceable guns firing. Action was broken off in the evening, and Hades headed to Troy for temporary repairs. She was patched up and underway for Scorpia Yards on 5 November. At Scorpia Yards, she underwent a yard overhaul and space trials that lasted into February 2001. The Patrolstar Hades was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for continuing to fight despite crippling damage to the ship.
It was during this time in February 2001, that Sidney was informed of the Admiralty's choice with regards to his future promotion and command. Sidney quickly pulled some strings and got his old friend Tyler brought in for a meeting with him. If Sidney were to make it in commanding a Gunstar, then a Battlestar was only so far off. As the future commander of a Battlestar he would need an XO that he could trust. And one who Sidney could be confident that he knew how the XO would work. Tyler was the only one fitting for the position.
Sidney knew when his tour was done with the Hades, that he would spend six months with the Hyperion. So he pulled some strings to get Tyler sent that way, so that he could work to make sure Ty made Captain before departing with Sid to the Hephaestus, as his CAG. From there six years as C.O. of the ship, and Sid could have Ty up to Major, and his OOD. Then, when the transfer to the Battlestar to follow happened, Sidney would have made Ty a Lt Col, and his XO. Then, Sidney would be Commander. At his top capacity.
After their meeting, the plan went into motion and Tyler was transferred over to the Hyperion, where Sid followed a few years later just before the Hyperion was to ship out for War Games.
