Personality
Likes:
- His Sketch Pad- Drawing is something Drake has always done and been rather good at. It's a stress reliever and one of his favorite hobbies.
- His Pilots- The men and women that fly next to him might as well be blood. Sure, he'll come down on them from time to time, but the gods help anyone who tries to do the same.
- Excercise- Like most soldiers, Drake likes to keep himself in shape. He's learned that marines like to call out pilots for not being as fit as themselves. He's also learned that he likes the look on their faces those times when he beats them.
- Pranks- Though his job requires he maintain a certain degree if professionalism most of the time, he is not averse to getting into mischief. His favorite way to do that is by way of practical jokes. Nothing that causes (a lot) of property damage or (too much) bodily harm to the target, just good, clean fun.
- Flying- He's a pilot. Of course he likes flying. It's one of his favorite things to do. Pretty typical flyboy stuff.
Dislikes:
- Hardass marines (and hardasses in general, but he really dislikes marines)- It's the superiority complex that gets under his skin.
- Anyone who messes with his flyboys- Fastest way onto Drake's shitlist
- Yes Men- Those spineless people who just go along with everything. Think for yourself and develop your own gods damned opinions. (Not to be confused with insubordination. He encourages his men to voice questions and concerns, but he will not tolerate disrespect.)
- Ducks- Mostly, it's their quacking.
- Stupid people- Pretty self explanatory
- Bullies- No. There is a line between fun (or discipline) and cruelty, and gods help you if you cross it.
Fears:
- Being alone- After a strained relationship with his father as a youth and a pretty much nonexistent one as an adult, joined with his long time away from home and limited contact with his mother, though critical in teaching Drake self reliance, has also created almost a dependency on others. He can function without them, but his entire personality changes, becoming more depressed and anxious.
- Dying- In combat and before his time, Drake fears death above all else. He has this dream of eventually retiring to start a family of his own. Can't do that if you're dead.
Strengths:
- People skills- he has a natural ability to empathize with and relate to people. This helps him in dealing with others both professionally and personally.
- Leadership- Not an innate trait, he grew into a leader through years of service and training.
- Creativity- If the situation (whether it's battle or otherwise) begins to go poorly, Drake is rather good at improvising to regain the upper hand or otherwise salvage the situation. Besides, he's an artist (kind of).
Weaknesses:
- Familiarity- He gets close to people easily, which sometimes affects his professionalism.
- Loose Cannon- When it comes to protocol and regulations, Drake has a tendency to play it fast and loose.
- Pride- Not to be confused with conceit. Drake just refuses to back down from a challenge, and don't you dare slight his honor. This extends to his men.
Aspirations: Retire after this last tour on Hyperion, settle down, and start a family; Repair his relationship with his father.
General Personality: Drake is a man who would rather lead from the front than give orders from a distance, and won't have his men do something he wouldn't be willing to do himself. He treats his pilots like family, because to him, they are. He can be hard on them, but it's only because he wants them to be their best. He has a tendency to question orders if he doesn't understand them, and expects his men to do the same to him. He doesn't go so far as to be insubordinate, he just likes to understand what he is supposed to be doing. Not one to be the center of attention, he likes to sit back and watch others enjoy themselves. Drake doesn't subscribe to any religion exclusively, saying he prefers to "sin in all religions equally".
Though he is confident in himself as a person, he has a bit of an inferiority complex when it comes to his skills as a leader. This stems from his childhood, when every accomplishment was diminished by his father. It isn't a crippling condition, but he takes failures to heart, and blames himself for operations gone awry. This is why he constantly strives to better himself.
The Backstory
History: History: Drake was born into a middle class family on Caprica. His father, Arthur, was a Colonial Marine, and Gwen, his mother, was a combat medic who had treated Arthur and fallen in love with him. Growing up, his father constantly berated him for not being "tough enough". It seemed like nothing Drake did was good enough for his father, every accomplishment cheapened by harsh criticism. From an early age, Drake was trained for the life of a marine. The boy had no interest in being an infantryman, dreaming instead of flight. He was, however, too afraid to voice these treasonous thoughts to his father.
When he went to high school, he made two more decisions that his father disapproved of. The first was to take art classes. It was not something that his father considered "necessary" or a "valuable skill". The other was to start running around with some street kid named Phaethon Kosta. The two were nigh inseparable, and though they didn't get into (a ridiculous amount of) trouble, Drake's father never liked Phae. He often spoke of how he would never amount to anything, and how Drake would follow suit if he kept associating with him. It was his friendship with Phaethon that gave him the courage to go through with becoming a pilot. Artorious was... Less than happy. Despite his father's objections, Drake enrolled in the Caprica Military Academy after graduation at the age of eighteen.
He passed the entrance examinations with flying colors. Arthur was absent the day Drake left for the Academy. He refused to have anything to do with a son who would turn his back on the Colonial Marines. In order to spite the father that disowned him, Drake made it his goal to be the best pilot he could be. He attacked his training with a fierce determination, and graduated in the top 20% of his class as an ensign.
His first assignment out of the Academy was the Battlestar Mercury. The young Ensign had been terrified, until he saw a friendly face on the flight deck. Yes, Phae and Drake were back together, and it wasn't long before they were up to their old tricks. Drake knew that his friend had wanted to be a pilot, but circumstance had left him unable to pursue that goal. Quietly, Drake organized some of the other pilots. Once he had his "crew", he offered to help Phae get his wings. The group tutored the deckhand, culminating in the addition of a new pilot, Ensign Kosta. The year without Phae wasn't exactly fun, but when he got back, they both had new pins to show each other. Phae, his rank and wings, and Drake his new LT JG pins. Someone must have noticed how close they were, because they were paired up. It was on his brother's wing that he first flew into combat, and on which he got his first kills after two enemy craft happened to fly into the crosshairs.
After a few years, Drake and Phae once again parted ways, with Phaethon going to the Triton and Drake headed for the Universal. He was stationed there from '95-98, racking up another confirmed kill when they went up against pirates. While with the Universal, he was promoted to Lieutenant. After his time on Universal, Drake went to Caprica for more advanced training. His superiors had noticed his charismatic personality, and thought that he could make a good leader if given some direction. For most of '98, he spent his time in training, tackling NSAWC, BOLC A, BOLC B, and even ATCOL. He even managed to sneak in Raptor qualification
The end of 1998 saw his transfer back to the Mercury, where he was made leader of a squadron of relatively new pilots, the Hornets. During his time there, he led his young, kick ass element against more pirates, culminating in three more enemies shot down, and a promotion to Captain.
The real highlight of his career came in 2002, when he was transferred to the Hyperion to take the recently open position as CAG. Even better, who else but Lt. Phaethon Kosta was one of his pilots.
With Phae on his wing again, they first flew over Tauron. Although they didn't need to fire a single shot, the tension Drake felt during the conflict was some of the worst he'd experienced in his career. They flew again at Pallas, Drake coordinating his Vipers with the ground forces, two completely different elements moving in unison. The operation mirrored a ballet, everyone dancing separately, yet moving as one. The Erebos campaign marked a very dark moment for Captain Wolfe. Flying against the pirates once again, Drake led his pilots into battle. This force, however, was quite a bit more prepared than they had been in the past. Though it was a landslide victory, the Air Group lost just over a half dozen of its pilots, including one of Drake's close friends. To this day, he hasn't stopped second guessing himself, trying to see where he went wrong and what he should have done instead. Drake only took two lives in that span, both in Erebos.
Anything Else?: The night before his first muster on Mercury, one of his bunkmates had drawn stars all over his face while he slept. The squad leader took notice. Thus, "Spangles" was born.
