Strengths:
--Integrity:
Sam is not a morally ambiguous character. What you see is what you get with her. That doesn’t necessarily mean she always makes the right choice, is never in the wrong, or doesn’t make mistakes. In fact she has and she will continue to have many shortcomings that constantly challenge her steady moral compass. Samantha is an honest and genuine person, and she is steadfast in her ability to be so whether it is good or bad.
--Diligent & Duty bound:
Honor, loyalty, and duty are very important to Sam. She may not act like it but Sam is slightly superstitious. In times of great sorrow or need she prays to the gods, namely Zeus, the regular situations in which those so inclined pray to various deities. She tries to be the best pilot she can be and to always do her duty. Sometimes though what is right conflicts with her duty, then she has been known to rebel against it but isn’t one that looks for conflict. She will try to go through the rising of the ranks as the diligent and dedicated viper pilot she is, nothing overly special, simply doing what is asked and expected of her.
Samantha is persistent, and one of those people that don’t know the meaning of quit. She will NEVER give up trying, fighting or surviving. She isn’t just going to lay down and die. This also relates to her other trait which can be equally seen as much of a strength as it is a weakness.
--Passionate:
Samantha is fiery, stubborn, and passionate in more ways than one. She likes sex that is for certain, but that isn’t the only activity she holds passion in. Perhaps the less steamy version, Sam is passionate when it comes to her job as a viper pilot and wants to do her best and in essence be the best. The only difference between her and other more outwardly arrogant pilots is that she won’t step on others to get where she’s going. She may be ambitious, but she isn’t overly so. She believes she will be promoted when she is worthy of such.
Her passion and vigor makes her eager, but also keeps her sharp. She is a great strategist. Up in the sky it’s an entirely different map then if you were on the ground. A map she has traversed well.
Weaknesses:
--Pride:
Samantha lets her pride hinder her from time to time in both social and professional situations. Her unwillingness to back down from people she sees in the wrong even when they out rank her has done more than its fair share to get her in hot water on occasion.
As touched on in personality Samantha can be cocky in the cockpit, she is an aggressive pilot and has an almost naïve notion that she is somehow invincible. The idea that she can fail at something is inevitable but unacceptable to Sam. Her pride and ego can get the better of her and she can go head on into something without thinking about the consequences. Those consequences might be her inevitable death. She only ever tends to be risky with her own life though and will do everything in her power to watch out for the lives of other pilots. She is not willing to lose another person she cares about. This is a good segue into her next weakness.
-- Emotional ties:
Samantha has had trouble gaining and keeping emotional ties without sabotaging them herself. When it comes to relationships it has been commented on that she is emotionally unavailable. Sam tries not to get attached romantically, it always gets messy when sex is involved. Contrarily she gets too emotionally invested in the lives of her fellow pilots and cannot let go if they are in danger. If a friend is in danger Sam will be the first to risk her life to save theirs regardless of her own life. She may even disobey orders to put her own life at risk. She has had brushes with authority on this.
--Authority Figures:
She likes and trusts authority figures. It’s not to say that she regularly has issues or tries to create problems with authority, but her fire-cracker ways, stubborn nature and her pride can sometimes clash with what is asked of her.
Aspirations: Wants to be the best damn Viper Pilot ever! On a short-term basis, wants to survive, protect the fleet, and keep flying.
General Personality:
First and foremost Sam is a tomboy. A rough and tumble kind of girl, she is tough as nails. Don’t let her smirky smile and easy-going nature fool you, she can get steely eyed if she needs to be. That stubborn little tiger can come out and bite you, or die trying. This isn’t to say that she is an expert fighter. Unless she’s in a cockpit you will probably kick her ass, but you can be certain that she won’t yield until she’s on the floor or in the medic bay. She is a scrappy little thing. Sam has very little training in hand-to-hand combat beyond what she has learned in the military academy or what her dad and Uncle Jed taught her in the back 40 with a shot gun and some beer cans. If out in the wilderness Sam would be handier at tracking than she would at actually shooting any game. On a battlestar this is unneeded and highly useless however.
Sam is seen as the easy-going, carefree, casual, good natured viper jockey. She rarely ever gets really mad at anyone, but if you’re an arrogant jerk you can be sure that she will put you in your place with a few choice words and a bit of good old-fashioned playful humiliation. If she does she doesn’t have the attention span to stay angry at them for long. Holding grudges is not a trait she has the capacity for, even if she does have a fiery temper. ‘The damsel in distress’ is not a card she will ever play, nor is it one she has in her repertoire, or trying to be coy and seduce you with her feminine wiles. If she wants to bed you, you’ll know it. Sam despises girly girls that treat her with disrespect or have a condescending attitude towards her simply because she acts more like a man in many regards, she still wants to be considered and treated like a woman. If you call her a man prepare to either be slapped or lose your jewels. Consider yourself warned if you disrespect her, her friends, family, the military period. She may not be the most vocal or one of the ‘straight as an arrow goody-goody’ pilots, but she has her loyalties. She doesn’t do girly, although she does do sexy…but that’s only if you’re lucky. Genuine in all her goofy, nonchalance and unbridled glory Sam is ballsy and stubborn. If anyone is going to be straightforward with you and tell you the truth without sugar coating it, it’s this girl! That isn’t to say that she doesn’t have tact or wisdom.
For all her hindrances Sam could actually be seen as a great leader. Her ability to give sage advice when those that wouldn’t expect it coming from her, need it the most, is a quality everyone is surprised by. Mostly it is her unwillingness to ever give in to defeat. Perhaps sometimes blindly so, but she is ultimately a survivor and will do everything in her power to help others survive as well.
It could be argued that Sam is all heart. Even though she tries to keep distant from others, she is genetically incapable of keeping others at arms-length. Her personality and demeanor draws them in, and she can’t let them go no matter how much she pretends not to care, or tells them that it’s their job not hers.
Strangely enough Samantha isn’t overly controlling. People will do what they do and there is nothing anyone can do to stop them. She has a very carefree, nonchalance about her. She isn’t apathetic, merely very laid-back, playful, and doesn’t take herself too seriously. Her sense of humor is fairly sarcastic and witty. She would much prefer being funny to serious, but when it comes to her duty she is very professional.
A naturally gifted pilot Sam was born to fly. Still, nothing worthwhile was ever earned easily. She continues to practice, lives and breathes her talent in order to further hone her craft. Her bravery shows itself most in the heat of battle. She would risk her own life to save a fellow pilot’s but will never put other’s lives in jeopardy. She isn’t perfect, which means she isn’t a perfect pilot either. Sure she’s damn good at what she does, maybe even one of the best in her squadron, but even her pride and ego can get in the way of that sometimes. She is an aggressive pilot and known for her speed and agility when flying. Samantha’s real skill, other than rocketing out of the tubes like a comet, is maneuvering: through and around objects, between spaces that shouldn’t be possible, and can fly complicated circles around you and have you confused before you even get a shot off at her. She has a tendency to take on more than she can handle. That being said she also knows when to step in and help someone out even when they won’t ask for it, perhaps because she rather hypocritically never asks for help either, even when she needs it.
Samantha has many flaws, things that perhaps aren’t seen as her fatal flaw or weaknesses previously mentioned. One such weakness is Samantha’s fondness for a hard drink, in particular Dos Aerilonius Whiskey. She has a rather high tolerance being from the south of Sagittaron and her family was simply brought up that way. Mint juleps and Mojitos were a regular thing around the Casey household for social gatherings. To drown out her nightmares, past indiscretions sometimes she will use alcohol as some form of coping. She never drinks on the job and wouldn’t be anything near to an alcoholic, but Sam tends to avoid her problems until they explode. Drinking, playing triad, working out, sex, she will do anything else other than actually face her problems until she is forced to confront them.
The Backstory
History: Samantha comes from simple beginnings. She grew up out in the boonies on Sagittaron. Her parents lived on relatively meager wages but they did alright considering and Samantha had never wanted for more, except when it came to flying, but more on that later. They lived in a farmhouse on a barren piece of land that the Casey family had held onto for generations. Most think the legacy of the Casey family just grew out of the mud right there on Sagittaron, and they were probably right. Either way the Casey ancestry started with Abner and his four brothers: Beau, Grant, Waylon, and Emon. They were out in search of gold. The descendants of the Casey family were known as rather strange, adventurers willing to go against the status quo. The Casey family has since tried as best they could to distance themselves from the five Casey brothers that started it all and live a respectable life. The Casey brothers bought the piece of land Samantha grew up on with the belief that it would bring them good fortune, literally and figuratively. To their dismay they found nothing. The soil itself was too hard and had too much clay to till or be useful. To this day the Casey family has worked in menial and manual labor on other farmer’s land.
Every generation tried to make a better name for the Casey family and do more than the hard labor they were brought into. Her family tried to distance themselves from their ancestry of the crazy Casey brothers. This resulted in Wyatt Casey being a very superstitious and traditional Sagittaron man. His wife and offspring followed suit. Every day they prayed to the god Zeus and it was simply tradition that they prayed to the various gods for certain situations regarding hardship and good fortune. Samantha’s father, Wyatt was a foreman on a neighboring winery to a man named Dallas Colton, a wealthy land owner, at least wealthy for Sagittaron. Wyatt knew everything there was to know about growing a good crop of grapes and making wine. Although the Casey farm was not good for growing grapes they still had a small dairy farm. Her mother Cora ran the farm and made cheese from the cows they raised. They sold milk, crème, butter, and various cheeses. That was Samantha’s legacy—milk and cheese—dairy products.
All Samantha ever wanted to be was a pilot. She yearned for something more than her rural upbringings. Her brother Deacon ran the dairy farm with their mother, and her sister Francine was a mid-wife. Samantha was the reckless rebel of the family. Her parents were somewhat unsettled about her decision to join the military after high school. Much to her mother’s chagrin her father felt that joining the military and becoming a viper pilot would help her gain some sense of discipline and perspective on the world. Wyatt wanted the best for his children, especially his spit-fire of a daughter. Even if he would never say he had a favorite Samantha was always his favorite. Not that you would ever know it by the way he yelled at her so much for all her acts of rebellion. Dancing was outlawed on Sagittaron for instance. Samantha had helped form a dance troop that would meet in secret.
When she was 16 the revolution on Sagittaron was taking place. Her father Wyatt Casey had been one such revolutionary. He was never a violent man, but he was a patriot of the Sagittaron ways and although he supported the Colonies and the government overall, particularly the military, he believed that a person should fight for what they believed in and what is right. Wyatt never took up arms against anyone, he didn’t believe that violence was the answer, but he did speak out. Some of the revolutionaries thought that Wyatt was too conservative in his efforts. The Casey home was a cesspool for trouble and mayhem on both sides’. Loyalists and revolutionists alike wanted his death or at least his imprisonment. It was in the brisk hours of morning, when the dew and frost had settled on the grass and plants outside her windowsill, that she was awoken by the loud splintering of wood as marines barged into her home.
The farmhouse was old, passed down from generation to generation. It creaked and groaned with their unwelcomed presence. A wide eyed 16 year old Samantha rushed out of bed and wrenched open the door to see what was going on. She was standing there one foot out of the door way when a large man with blonde hair and gear turned the corner and began yelling orders at her. “What is going on?” she demanded, fear written on her face, “Who are you?” she asked firmly even in the face of her bewilderment. She was more than a little angry, that telltale Casey fire igniting in her eyes. How dare these people come into her home like this? What were they after? Her questions were answered with a gun shoved in her face. She had opened her mouth to ask another question, demand a name, something, anything, but she quickly shut it again. Her breath caught in her throat as the giant of a man, who didn’t look much older than herself…but he was huge…moved towards her, gun still raised, repeating the orders more sternly this time. Perhaps just baby faced, she thought to herself. It was odd to be pondering this man’s age at a time like this but perhaps being able to focus on anything other than the gun pointed in her general direction helped her feel not quite as rooted to the floorboards.
She was roughly handled when she wouldn’t move. Sam had felt stuck, in shock. She was pushed to the floor on her stomach and her hands were zip tied behind her back. She remembered feeling the warmth of the wood floor against her skin and distinctly remembered wanting to stay there, but she was jostled into a seated position. She stared blankly up at the marines. It felt like she sat there a very long time, although it was probably only a few minutes while the other family members were gathered and taken outside or congregated in a room somewhere while the rest of the house was searched. She had no idea what was going on, the only thing she could see was the inside of her room and the marines holding her there. The zip ties were tight and dug into her wrists. They were uncomfortable, she continued to squirm slightly and fiddle with them. Then suddenly her father Wyatt showed up in the doorway. “Son, I suggest you back away from my daughter now,” he told Alexander the blonde marine, “You’re quarrel is with me not her. She hasn’t done anything wrong,” he held up his hands in a sign of no harm and indicating that he would not resist, “Please, cut her lose. You’ve got me,” said holding his hands out to the marines. For the next events that happened time seemed to speed up. Samantha remembers her father telling her that the marines were just doing their jobs, and that everything would be alright, “Remember Jelly Bean, you always fight for what you believe in, and follow your dreams my girl, you will be fine.” Her father was taken away and imprisoned. His sentence was 9 months, because he was let out early on good behavior and had complied fully with the charges placed upon him. He got out of prison the day of her High School graduation and was able to see her off. Over the course of the nine months Sam got to visit her father. From their conversations she knew that he never disliked the military, and in fact he supported her wish to join up, he simply couldn’t stand by and not fight for his home, even if he only ever fought with words.
The night before she was to leave for the Academy on Sagittaron she sat on the front porch with her father who was smoking a cigar and drinking a glass of whiskey he hadn’t tasted in 9 months trying to get away from the ruckus of the household. They had a nice heart to heart. “I know you will do great things Jelly Bean,” Wyatt told his daughter, “Work hard, don’t piss off your superiors within the first few weeks and you should be fine,” he told her, “Remember nothing was ever gained by sitting on your ass, if you want something badly enough you can get it, and remember that you’re never good at anything the first time out. It takes 99% blood, sweat and tears and 1% talent. You’ve got that 1% kid, so go make something of yourself,” and that was that. Samantha was enrolled in the military academy, and of course the first day pissed off her training officer.
Her decision to go into the military was only further solidified by the devastation of her high school sweetheart. Joshua Winslow, a nice Sagittarion boy had fallen madly in love with her. They dated throughout high school and had held onto fairytale romantic notions of being together forever. Samantha loved Josh deeply and truly believed at the time that they would be together forever. From 18-22 she was away at academy. Josh had followed her into the academy. Although he couldn’t cut it as a viper pilot but he kept trying. Josh washed out twice before he finally made it. At 21 Josh had proposed and they were to be married the next year after they finished academy. It was then that Samantha did the worst thing she could possibly think of, she broke his heart. They had been preparing the wedding for over a year. Sam left Josh at the alter with nothing more than a letter explaining her reasoning and her apology. It would never be enough, she knew that, she had crushed Josh, the only person she had ever truly loved, and yet, she had never loved him the way he had wanted her to. They weren’t meant to be the forever kind of love. She wasn’t ready for forever, and he wasn’t the man she wanted forever with. Of course she left that bit out. From that point on going into flight school alone she vowed never to get so romantically attached or emotionally involved with someone ever again, fearing that she would just hurt them leaving them rejected, betrayed, and their heart filleted.
Leaving the Academy and entering Flight School on Sagittaron she was an Ensign. Upon receiving her wings at 23, Sam was assigned to the Mercury Battlestar. Her younger brother Landis had also joined the military and made his way through Flight School and was assigned to the Triton, a Battlestar which the Mercury worked closely with often. For the next 6 months the Casey siblings were an unparalleled duo when the Mercury and Triton worked together to take down their enemies.
At 25 Samantha lost the thing that meant the most to her, Landis her little brother who looked up to her. She was supposed to protect him, it was her unspoken mandatory occupation as a big sister. The ship was near the moon of Rhea around the planet of Hestia at the time. The moon was being pillaged by pirates. These pirates were a powerful force, leaving death and destruction in their wake. The Mercury had been in pursuit of them ever since they had desecrated another moon much like this one. The Triton had been requested to assist in the elimination of the pirate vessel.
As usual the Casey siblings were kicking ass and surpassing every expectation placed on them. Samantha blames herself for Landis’ death. Her brother had pushed ahead. Admittedly they did banter over the wire to one another as they blasted the pirate’s fighters out of the sky, it was what they always did. It was tradition. They had a system and it worked seamlessly.
This time Landis wanted to go first and be the trail blazer, diverting from their carefully cultivated system. “This isn’t a game! Stop being so cocky,” Sam had warned him. “I’m my own man now, I can do what I want and you can’t stop me now Sis,” he’d snapped back. “Fine, I can’t stop you, go, be your own man, but watch for flank, gods dammit,” she had warned again this time a lot more sternly as her brother pushed into the lead. “That’s what you’re there for,” he was mid-sentence, laughing even, when he was hit hard. Sam watched as his viper caught fire immediately and exploded in front of her. Sam had to swerve to avoid getting hit by his debris.
It was meant to be her. She had never felt so much rage erupt inside her like an animal clawing to get out as she had in that moment. Without regard for her own life she barreled forward rounding on the fighters who had taken out her brother and killed every last one. Then she dove at the ship like a kamikaze. Much to the protest of her CAG she ignored every command thrown at her to stop. Samantha was going to kill them or die trying. In fact she hoped and prayed for the latter. She wove this way and that, her viper getting battered as she swooped toward the back of the ship. Flipping her viper around she fired everything she had at the stern of the ship. The ship began leaking fuel and Samantha along with Dustin “Dusty” Terrell one of her fellow Sagittaron’s and wingman joined alongside her and together they helped the rest of the Triton and the Mercury’s vipers destroy the pirate ship. The distraction Sam had made gave the other vipers a leg up with the pirates now concerned with attacks on all sides, and the onslaught of vipers. The combined efforts of the Mercury and the Triton were a success. The pirate ship finally exploded in a sea of color and for a moment almost looked like a super nova. This is where Sam got her call sign, Nova. Samantha nearly died of course. Her viper had been shot up and damaged beyond repair. Sam was too busy barreling down on the vessel to give too much care to being shot at by the pirate’s fighters. With the explosion she had cleared the pirate ship, but barely. Her canopy was cracked and creating spider web like splinters until she was forced to eject from her viper. She had nearly run out of air before a raptor was able to pick her up. She passed out on the floor of the raptor and welcomed death.
Death did not come for her however. A few nights in the brig for her insubordination, a funeral for those they had lost, and then a commendation for her bravery in the face of insurmountable odds amounted to the result of her part in the battle. After the death of her brother Samantha Casey needed a change. She requested a transfer to anywhere but the Mercury or the Triton. She left Dusty and the others in search of a new home, and she was situated with the Hyperion.
For two years she served on the Hyperion. Eager to run away from her past indiscretions and failings she tried to keep her head down and be the dedicated and diligent pilot she had set out to be. Now at 27 she has been promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade for her time in service and relentless dedication.
Anything Else?: Samantha has a bit of a southern accent reminiscent of her upbringing on Sagittaron. The dulcet tones of her sexy southern drawl only become very unmistakably apparent when she’s drunk, emotional, or angry.
Samantha has a talent for singing, not that she would ever reveal this to anyone. Sometimes she sings in the shower when no one else is around. She also really loves doing victory dances. Those she makes up and shows off of course. She can be a tad mouthy sometimes.
Sam doesn't do pretty, just like she doesn’t cry in public. Sexy is an entirely different story however. Dressing up and being girly is the worst! But she is not a man! If anyone ever calls her such she will slap them upside the head or punch them in the face. Sam has been trained by her brothers and father in kickboxing, boxing and learned how to shoot a gun. She has pretty good aim really but combat is much different than training as she has quickly learned (as stated above she is no expert, and doesn’t expect to win in a hand-to-hand combat fight). She has a habit of choosing cheating boyfriends. She likes bad boys and thinks tattoos are awesome.
Her viper is Viper #12 and it’s her baby, she loves it and would never want another one.
