Other Notable Persons: Dr. Marlowe, a teacher and close friend of Mark's during his residency. Helped him become the skillful doctor that his is now.
Personality: When he was young and married, Mark was very outgoing and happy. The combination of cylon attacks and losing his wife and child changed him in a negative manner. Although he is polite and approachable on a medical level, socially he normally keeps to himself, and does not like revealing much about his past. Recounting his loss would only pain him more. He tries his best to hide his sad feelings, and although they're not blatantly obvious, are notable. He is a workaholic based on a need to clear his mind about his loss, and only when in private, is forced to face his feelings.
Likes: healing and helping others, reading, quiet rooms, his wife and daughter (family morals), jogging to clear his mind
Dislikes: Losing patients/death in general, crowds of people, loud noises/disruption of any kind, confined spaces, and abusive people
Fears: Losing someone close to him...again.
Aspirations: Although it may not seem grandiose, Mark struggles and hopes to one day get over the loss of his small but significant family. His consistent grieving does not allow him to move on and emotionally and mentally has a toll on him. This does not mean getting a girlfriend or anything to quickly solve problems, but a larger picture that indicates he struggles with loss.
Equipment: All that is available in Sick Bay
Anything Else?: Despite being depressed and not opening up easily to others, Mark is still polite and sociable. Mark is NOT Riley, he is not SUPER shy and awkward, but his inner struggle does affect him deeply. After such a large emotional loss, Mark chooses not to get close to anyone else, in fear of possibly losing them as well.
History:
Mark DePaul was born into a small but prominent family on Libran, in the town of Themis. Both of his parents were successful lawyers, extremely well mannered and educated, and encouraged both him and his sister Camile to read, write, and paint. Such encouragement of creativity allowed him to expand his mind and pursue other interests, one of which was a basic need to help and nurture others. When it became clear that he wanted to become a doctor his parents urged him to apply to college.
In college when studying pre-med, Mark signed up for ROTC. Acknowledging the debt he accumulated from his schooling, Mark decided to enlist to become a marine shortly after. In signing up with the army, he hoped to find a way to pay off his debts.
Pursuing a military career as a marine was challenging for him. With the underlying assumption that he must follow commands and potentially kill, Mark was going against his beliefs of healing. After basic training and a posting for a couple years, DePaul decided that he finally had enough of the marine life and switched career paths.
Not completely letting go of his army career or of his original dream, Mark began studying to become a trauma surgeon in a military program. In all of his studies he was at the top of his class and considered especially talented. Sweet and kind, his personality, looks, and educational prowess earned him appreciation and acceptance from others. During his time at med school, he met the love of his life Aveline.
The two met rather serendipitously when her umbrella blew out of her hand and she gave chase. Catching it, he handed it over to her and worked up the courage to ask her out for some coffee. After a surprisingly good lunch, it became clear that they were attracted to one another, and in weeks time, begin dating. The two continued to date throughout his medical schooling, and even during his residency at a Military hospital on Caprica. Upon completing both his schooling through the military and his residency on Caprica, he decided to propose to Aveline.
Shortly after finishing his residency, Mark was assigned to a variety of military vessels throughout his career, starting as small as the patrolstar Achilles but quickly making his way up the ranks and transferring to other ships within a couple years, such as the Gunstar Hera. Although Mark moved around a bit early on in smaller ships, his medical skill could not be denied, and he soon was able to serve on a Battlestar. The core of his career would be centered around aboard the Battlestar Galatica and the Battlestar Atlantia. It wouldn't be until the creation of the Hyperion, would he decide to transfer once more.
Through his service in the military, Mark would proactively visit his wife every shore leave. Despite being madly in love with one another, Mark and Aveline could not conceive for years. After many tearful fights and restless nights, the two eventually gave up. It would be only a few years later that Aveline would miraculously become pregnant.
Despite being a slightly older woman now, having a healthy baby was still very possible for Aveline, and although his specialty was not as a pediatrician, Mark kept detailed tabs of the progress of the pregnancy and the health of his wife when he was away on duty. A sonogram revealed that they were having a girl, and they planned to name her Clarisse.
Aveline was in the middle of labor when the planet was starting to get bombed. Mark was serving aboard the Hyperion when the Cylons attacked. it would be through survivors and damage reports that followed that would confirm that one of the bombs struck his hometown of Themis, where his wife and parents were.
On the Hyperion, Mark had gone up through the ranks and only became second to Chief Medical Officer Logan MacArthur. For an additional four months, he continued to serve in his current posting post-cylon attack. Following the Battle of Caprica, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and appointed Chief Medical Officer of the Hyperion
There on Hyperion, he still struggles to cope with his loss, not only that of his world and parents, but most importantly of his wife and daughter.
